"True Confessions - The Basics Retold"
Text: Romans 10:9 (King
Topic: "True Confessions - The Basics Retold"
The New Living Translation (NLT) of our Scripture
text for this evening reads as follows: "For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that
God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Notice, that the Scripture passage did not say you are saved - it says "you
will be saved."
I want you to know, this evening, my brothers and sisters, that I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus,
the Christ! I am not ashamed to own Jesus, the Christ, as my personal Lord and Saviour! I am not ashamed of His principles
or of His teachings! Know this, my brothers and sisters, no Christian "true believer" should be ashamed of a God who died
a horrible death so that we could have eternal life - immortality with Him in Heaven for all of eternity!
It was the
Apostle Paul who told the Romans and us, in Romans 1:16-17 (NLT): "For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It
is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes - Jews first and also Gentiles. (vs. 17) This Good News tells us
how God makes us right in His sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, ’It
is through faith that a righteous person has life.’"
Jesus, the Christ, Himself, tells us what awaits us if we
do not defend Him before mankind - both male and female! The word mankind is not gender specific - but means both men and
women! Listen to Jesus as He speaks to us from Matthew 10:32-33 (NLT): "If anyone acknowledges Me publicly here on earth,
I will openly acknowledge that person before My Father in Heaven. (vs. 33) But if anyone denies Me here on earth; I will deny
that person before My Father in Heaven."
Our "Roadmap for Christian Living" - the written Word of Almighty God - provides
us with many examples of people who were willing to publicly confess Jesus, the Christ, and many who were not willing to do
so. Let’s take some time, this evening, to see what lessons can be gleaned from their stories - what is it that we can
learn from them? Is that all right?
Perhaps the most notable of all the Biblical characters, when one ponders on the
image of confessing or denying Jesus, the Christ, is the "impetuous" Disciple (and, later Apostle) Peter! Peter told Jesus,
as recorded in Matthew 26:33 (NLT): "...Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will." However, when the "great test" -
that pop-up quiz of his faith came - Peter failed the exam! For while Jesus was being prosecuted in a "mock trial" and crucified
for your sins and mine, Peter not only denied Jesus, the Christ, three (3) times; but on that third time, he did so with cursing
and swear words!
Jesus had already told Peter that he would deny Him thrice and His prediction came to fruition! As
soon as Peter realized what he had done, my Holy Bible tells me that he wept bitterly and was repentant! There is no doubt
that Peter’s intentions were good - however, his flesh was weak and being overwhelmed by his circumstances, Peter yielded
to temptation and denied the very Lord and Saviour whom he had lovingly confessed only a short time earlier!
time of testing - and we will have tests if we live long enough - we might do well to remember Peter’s story so that
we will remain strong and not weaken as Peter did and fall into sin! Should we sin, however, if we will truly repent, Almighty
God will forgive us - and not only that, He will forget our sin! Almighty God throws our sin into the "Sea of Forgetfulness"
- that place whose shores bear the signs: "NO SCUBA DIVING ALLOWED!" In other words, my brothers and sisters, our sins will
never be heard of again unless we ignore the signs and dive in after them! Many of us do that, don’t we?
to remember that Peter walked and talked with Jesus, the Christ, every day of his life for three and one-half years; yet,
he still denied Jesus at a very crucial time! Almighty God, however, forgave and forgot, as witnessed by his use of Peter
as the "Head Apostle" - the leader of the other eleven!
The Jewish people as a nation, refused to see and acknowledge
Jesus, the Christ, as the "true" Messiah! This denial and neglect to acknowledge the Truth, caused Jesus, the Christ, to have
a heavy heart! In Matthew 23:37 (KJV), we find Jesus saying: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and
stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her
chickens under her wings, and ye would not." The New Living Translation (NLT) puts it this way: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the
city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as
a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me."
Tell me, my brothers and sisters, "Will
you let Jesus, the Christ, do that for you? If not, why not? And if not, you certainly need to! Just look at Judas Iscariot,
he also failed Almighty God, he also failed the test, he also was sorry for His misdeed! Unlike Peter, however, Judas Iscariot
went out, in his depressed state, and hung himself! Jesus tells us, in John 17:12 (KJV): "While I was with them in the world,
I kept them in Thy name: those that Thou gavest Me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the
Scripture might be fulfilled." In 1 John 1:19 (KJV), we read: "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they
had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they
were not all of us."
You see, church, it is important to always confess Jesus, the Christ, as our Lord and Saviour
- in the "good times" - in the "bad times" - yes, and even in the "ugly" times! Confession that Jesus, the Christ, is - in
fact - the Son of the Living God Almighty, is a confession of the mouth concerning what is believed in the heart!
I begin to close, this evening, remember that confession and/or repentance alone does not save us! We must hear the Word of
Almighty God to know how and why we need to confess or repent! We must believe the Word of Almighty God or we will not have
the desire to confess or repent! We must then take action and complete the process of letting Jesus, the Christ, in the power
of the Holy Ghost (or, Holy Spirit), be our Lord and Saviour! Are you willing to do that? If not, why not? If not you, then
who? If not here, then where? If not now, then when? Why don’t you open up your heart tonight and let Jesus in?
Holy Bible tells me, in Isaiah 45:23 (KJV), that Almighty God says: "I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth
in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear." The Apostle Paul, in
Romans 14:11 (KJV), tells us: "For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue
shall confess to God."
As I take my seat, you have heard from Almighty God Himself that you will, indeed, bow down
to Him and confess Him! The questions become, "How will you do it? Will it be here on earth, while the blood is still running
warm in your veins, while there is still hope? Or, "Will it be at the ’White Throne Judgment’ - reserved for sinners
- when all hope is lost and you are condemned to eternal damnation? The choice is yours, which will it be - Heaven or Hell?"
